Observance of the National Mourning Day 2012 and the 37th Anniversary of Martyrdom of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

National Mourning Day 2012 and the 37th Anniversary of Martyrdom of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed on 15 August 2012 at the Embassy of Bangladesh in Bangkok with due solemnity. Embassy officials and members of Bangladesh community in Thailand attended the programme.

The programme began with the hoisting of the national flag at half-mast by the Ambassador at the Chancery. One minute silence was observed in memory of and homage to Bangabandhu. A special munajat was offered seeking divine peace and blessings for the departed souls of Bangabandhu and members of his family, who were assassinated on the fateful night of 15 August 1975. All participants wore black badges as a mark of respect to the memory of Bangabandhu and members of his family who embraced martyrdom on 15 August 1975.

Messages, given on the occasion by the Hon'ble President, Hon'ble Prime Minister and Hon'ble Foreign Minister were read out by the Ambassador. A documentary on the life and contributions of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman titled 'Bangabandhu- Forever in our Hearts' was shown. A discussion session was also organized with His Excellency Kazi Imtiaz Hossain, Bangladesh Ambassador to Thailand in the Chair and it was attended by the officials of the Embassy and Bangladesh community living in Thailand. In his speech, the Ambassador recalled the contributions of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the freedom struggle of Bangladesh culminating in the independence of Bangladesh. He remarked that the most befitting tribute and homage to the Father of the nation Bangabandhu would be to follow his ideals and transform in working into Sonar Bangla (Golden Bengal).

An Essay Competition on the life and works of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was also arranged for the Bangladeshi children residing in Thailand to create awareness about the true history of Bangladesh and its architect Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
